Joint Replacements Of The Hip, Knee, And Shoulder

Joint Replacements Of The Hip, Knee, And Shoulder

Macomb Orthopedics specializes in surgical and non-surgical management of arthropathies and arthritis-type injuries of the hip, knee and shoulder such as arthritis, meniscal tears, ligament damage and rotator cuff tears.

Surgical interventions include partial knee arthroplasties, total knee arthroplasties, robotic-assisted arthroplasties, anatomic individualized total arthroplasties, minimally invasive direct anterior approach total hip arthroplasties, reverse and anatomic total shoulder replacements.

Non-surgical treatment includes medical management, corticosteroid injections, visco-supplementation injections, advanced imaging review and interpretation.

There is no definitive "right" time when a person should have their hip, knee or shoulder replaced. That's a conversation that should take place with the orthopedic surgeon and family members.

Some orthopedic surgeons aggressively recommend certain procedures be performed. Macomb Orthopedics does not take that approach. We think the right time is when you're physically , mentally and emotionally ready to proceed.

Joint replacements of the hip, knee, and shoulder can be extremely successful procedures and last for many years, but unfortunately the mechanical joint components do not always last a lifetime. Therefore, joint replacement sometimes become necessary.

Sometimes procedures are performed purely on an elective basis, other times the need for surgical intervention is more urgent.

Examples of treatment include:

  • Conversion of previous hip or knee surgeries to primary total knee arthroplasties.
  • Conversion of partial knee arthroplasties to total knee arthroplasties.
  • Conversion of previous arthroplasty procedures to full joint replacements.

Before deciding on any procedure, a thorough conversation with the orthopedic surgeon and family members is required. Having advanced training in adult reconstruction orthopedics allows Macomb Orthopedics to maximize outcomes post-operatively.

Arthroscopy is a less invasive procedure than surgery. It's used for treatment of a torn meniscus, cartilage damage, shoulder bursitis, rotator cuff damage and labral tears of the shoulder.

There are numerous reasons to undergo arthroscopies of the knee and shoulder including clean-up procedures, meniscal procedures (both repair and excision of torn pieces), ACL reconstructions, cartilage restoration procedures. Shoulder procedures include labral repair, biceps tenotomy and rotator cuff repairs.

Trauma To Bones, Joints And The Surrounding Soft Tissues

Trauma To Bones, Joints And The Surrounding Soft Tissues

Trauma To Bones, Joints And The Surrounding Soft Tissues

Trauma is defined as injury caused by an external source, and can often be life threatening. In the field of orthopedic medicine, trauma or orthopedic trauma is categorized as a severe injury to the elements of the musculoskeletal system (muscles, joints, ligaments, bones, and soft tissue). These trauma injuries are often the result of a sudden accident, like a fall, that requires immediate medical attention. While these injuries are not all life-threatening, they are life altering. Therefore, the help of an orthopedic surgeon is crucial.

Truth is, orthopedic trauma such as fractures can occur to anyone, at any time. In particular, the treatment of a fracture focuses on restoring function as quickly and as fully as possible. While many fractures will heal on their own, some need to be treated surgically for optimal outcomes. Although orthopedic physicians would rather treat injuries with non-surgical methods such as physical therapy, in the case of trauma, surgical treatment often ensures a more complete recovery, and allows for restoring function more quickly.

Orthopedic trauma care covers the spectrum of simple fractures to severe life-threatening accidents with multiple broken bones. More significant injuries with multiple broken bones, compound fractures and joint fractures, are more difficult to treat, and will benefit the most from receiving specialized care. At Macomb Orthopedics we have the unique expertise and training to treat these traumatic orthopedic injuries with a personalized approach. Some of these trauma injuries include:

  • Fractures (Joints and bones including hip, femur, tibia, ankle, wrist, humerus, hand, foot)
  • Fragility fractures from osteoporosis or metabolic bone disease
  • Dislocations
  • Amputations
  • Nonunion and malunion (problems with healing and healing with poor alignment
