About Macomb Orthopedics

Dr. Wagner was born and raised in Troy, MI. He was exposed to orthopedic surgery at a young age with two uncles that practice in the field. His first experience in the operating room was as a senior in high school, and it was there that he notes he was hooked. After graduating high school, Dr. Wagner attended Purdue University where he received his Bachelors of Science with a degree in Neurobiology with Physiology. From there he earned his medical degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He successfully completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at McLaren Macomb in Mt. Clemens, MI where he would score in the top ten percentile nationally in his board examinations. In addition to training in general orthopedics Dr. Wagner has also completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction orthopedics, including advanced hip and knee replacements, at The CORE Institute in Phoenix, AZ. With his training complete Dr. Wagner chose to return home to serve the community that raised him with his wife and two small daughters. Dr Wagner is board certified in orthopedic surgery and is currently the chairman of the orthopedics department as well as the director of the hospital’s joint replacement program.

In this podcast interview, Dr. Michael Wagner discusses breakthrough advancements in joint replacement surgery, including robotics-assisted surgery.

1. What are the main reasons patients consider joint replacement? What are they typically experiencing in their daily lives, prior to the procedure?

2. Are patients typically of a certain age, or are you seeing younger patients in need of joint replacement?

3. There are various procedures used for joint replacement. You seem to be an advocate for robotics-assisted joint replacement procedures. “Robotics-assisted surgery” may be a new term for some of our listeners. What does that mean?

Dr. Amjad Yaish is a board certified Orthopedic surgeon who has been providing quality orthopedic care to the people of Macomb county and the neighboring communities for over 20 years. Dr. Yaish was born and raised in Bloomfield Hills Michigan and went on to complete his undergraduate pre-medical training at Vanderbilt University. He graduated with honors from medical school at Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. His internship and Orthopedic surgery residency were completed at McLaren Macomb Hospital (formerly Mt. Clemens General hospital). For over a decade, Dr. Yaish has served as the Program Director of the Orthopedic Residency Training Program at McLaren Macomb hospital. He also served as Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopedics from 2008-2020. He is past president and current board member of the Michigan Osteopathic Association of Orthopedics Surgeons. In the fall of 2020, Dr. Yaish was honored with the Award of Fellow by the American Osteopathic Association of Orthopedics. This award is bestowed to members who have demonstrated great commitment to their academy, patients, practice, hospitals and communities.

Dr. Samuel Howard is a fellowship-trained Orthopedic Sports Medicine surgeon,
specializing in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, knee, and elbow, as well as total and reverse shoulder replacements. He performs a wide range of advanced procedures, including rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability surgery, SLAP and labral repairs, biceps tenodesis, ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair or
meniscectomy, MPFL reconstruction, and cartilage restoration procedures. Dr. Howard
also offers expert non-surgical care for common conditions such as patellar tendinitis,
Achilles tendinitis, frozen shoulder, trochanteric bursitis, joint sprains, and fractures.

Dr. Howard was born and raised in Oxford, MI. He received his Bachelor of Science in
Biology from Oakland University and then went on to earn his medical degree from
Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He successfully completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at McLaren Oakland Hospital before completing a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at Beacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Cincinnati. During his fellowship, Dr. Howard provided care for all levels of athletes. He served as an associate team physician for the Cincinnati Reds, Miami (OH) University Redhawks, Archbishop Moeller High School Crusaders, and Madeira High School Mustangs. After completing his fellowship, he decided to return home to Michigan with his wife and 3 children to serve the community he grew up in. Whether in clinic or at home, Dr. Howard applies the same energy, commitment, and focus to his patients as he does to his family and life.
